The NEST Art Community began in 1990 by Victor Mulaire, the founder of Cricket Hosiery Co (the world renowned Tic Tac Toe brand of children's socks). Cricket Hosiery was the first company to combine the use of knitting machines with computers to design and produce graphic socks and employed a number of graphic artists to design socks and stockings, establishing an early relationship with the arts community.
In 1996 sculptor John Carnright set up the first studio in Cricket Hosiery's factory space. Launching the concept of creating a local community of artists. Other artists soon joined, with early founders David Flynn, Jed Wolf, Peter Konsterlie, Peter Duveen, Marie Riviera, Bob Ledoux, and Joe Provey, followed by many others.
In 2012, the factory building burnt to the ground and Cricket Hosiery eventually moved to the present Fairfield Avenue location in Bridgeport. Artist easels and drawing tables replaced knitting machines as the space became the new NEST Arts Factory. The new building that the NEST took over once was a piano factory as well as the home of Aerosol Techniques, which created the first hair spray.
Today, Vic serves as the Executive Director of the NEST Arts Factory - creative home to over 30 artists and musicians.

Metro Art Studios is located in the historic Crown Corset factory building on Railroad Avenue in the South End of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The three-story building has been meticulously renovated to accommodate fine artists in 38 studios. The grounds will include space for outdoor performances and a public art garden featuring murals and sculptures by local artists. The Crown Corset factory, built in 1907, manufactured corsets, hoop skirts, and other foundation garments. The 500 mostly female workers of the factory walked out in August, 1915, joining a strike of garment workers in Bridgeport that led to all American workers having an 8-hour work day. The creativity and productivity of the building lives on with the vibrant and thriving arts community that now resides within its walls.
Metro Art Studios is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing free and low-cost art, music, and cultural events and experiences to the public of the Greater Bridgeport CT region. Metro also supports professional fine artists with resources, networking opportunities, and workshops.

The Bijou Theatre has a long and colorful history dating back to 1909. Silent films were growing in popularity and Lillian Ashmun commissioned architect Ernest G. Southey to design a movie house with a two-story ballroom above. It was common for the Bijou to offer three or four Vaudeville shows every day. The price per ticket back then? 5 cents for matinees, 10 cents for evening shows!
Aside from movies, the Bijou Theatre was alive with music and dance. Peter Dawe bought the building and Daniel J. Quilty, a master dance instructor, operated his College of Dancing, bringing waltz, polka, tap and ballet lessons to the city of Bridgeport until 1950.
Trends come and go, and in the second half of the 1900s the Bijou Theatre underwent different identities and was renamed The Rivoli, Downtown Cinema and then Downtown Family Cinema. One hundred years after showing its first movie, the Bijou Theatre regained its original name. Our goal now is to retain the spirit that comes with it.

The Greater Bridgeport Symphony has been a cornerstone of the cultural community in and around Bridgeport since its inception as a WPA Arts Program Project in 1934. After the war, it was formally organized and funded by the large industries and businesses that once dominated Bridgeport. Through its illustrious Music Directors — Daniel Saidenburg, Jonel Perlea, Jose Iturbi, Gustav Meier (for 42 seasons) and Eric Jacobsen (the past 9 seasons)– GBS has established a high standard for orchestral music in the region, and is a growing force for music education in Bridgeport’s schools. The GBS is a professional orchestra that typically presents five mainstage concerts each season, in addition to chamber music. The orchestra’s recent projects include “Blue as the Turquoise Night,” an album in collaboration with members of the Silkroad Ensemble, video projects with Colin Jacobsen and Simone Porter, and concert performances with world-class artists including Gil Shaham and Yuja Wang. GBS presents educational programming in the Bridgeport Public Schools and offers a variety of grant and donor-funded music education programs for students of all ages. During the pandemic, GBS presented live outdoor concerts, as well as a full-orchestra virtual season in 2020-21, returning to a full season of in-person, indoor concerts in late 2021. Professional staff includes a full time Executive Director, as well as part-time Personnel Manager, Operations Manager, Librarian, Public Relations Manager, and Bookkeeper. GBS looks to a future of even greater immersion in the diverse community we call home, presenting the best of the classics with new music, enhancing the Greater Bridgeport region as a flourishing cultural center in Connecticut.

Liz received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999 and has been drawing, painting and screen printing ever since.
Her work bridges the gap between gallery art and street art making it accessible to everyone. Public art brings fine art and creative illusion to the street, whereas her screenprints bring imagery such as powerlines and industrial landscapes to gallery walls.
Liz's public art can be seen in White Plains, NY, Stamford, CT and Bridgeport, CT where Liz currently resides. She is also a member of the Loft Artist Association (LAA) in Stamford, CT.

City Lights/Bridgeport Art Trail employs the platform of the arts to bring together people of diverse backgrounds to share a cultural experience, through relevant and thought-provoking exhibits and programs, that embrace diversity, equity and inclusion; this includes content, process, decision making and representation. This is evident in the CL exhibit and program archives.
It is our belief that actions speak louder than words, therefore, CL was not quick to write a DEI statement, to avoid a potential for tokenism. CL took time to listen and process events, facts and attitudes. The learning and refining of practices will be on-going, but the attitude of respect and coexistence will not change. In January 2021 we witnessed how words matter and affect actions. It is the culture of City Lights & Company to welcome all to the table regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, ability, or background, to produce programs and determine content and decsion-making. CL is committed to supporting and presenting the spectrum of artistic expression of Greater Bridgeport, the region and beyond. Programs are free and open to the public.

Art in public spaces brings art to where people naturally congregate. It beautifies and activates spaces, reflects heritage and supports placemaking. The creative spirit in formidable. Art can be part of the disruption as well as part of the problem solving and healing process. Throughout the Covid season, artists and creatives have inspired us, enriched us, entertained us, and kept us socially connected while we needed to be physically distant. Barnum loved nothing more than joining entertainment and education, and he conceived of the Barnum Institute of Science and History (as it was originally known) as a lasting legacy, a celebration of American cultural and scientific achievement.
Barnum was devoted to the museum project, giving his own land, funds, collections and expertise to ensure its success; but he did not live to see it completed, approving plans for the building’s construction only three weeks before his death on April 7, 1891. Costing some $85,000 to construct, the building opened on February 18, 1893 and has been part of downtown Bridgeport ever since.
The Barnum Museum is the leading authority on P.T. Barnum’s life and work, and contains more than 60,000 artifacts relating to Barnum, Bridgeport and 19th century America. We are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Led by executive director Kathleen Maher – a museum veteran and an industry expert in arts administration, historic preservation and cultural heritage – the Museum remains committed to Barnum’s own mission: growing curiosity, creativity and confidence through instructive entertainment.
Authors, journalists, filmmakers, researchers, museums and attractions look to the Museum for its expertise and enthusiasm about all things Barnum, and the Museum is regularly featured in outlets including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the History Channel, BBC, NPR, Atlas Obscura, TED and more. The Museum eagerly partners with other cultural institutions to bring P.T. Barnum’s life and legacy to a broader audience.
The Museum stands as a great American national treasure and a unique physical testament to P.T. Barnum’s life. In cooperation with its community, fans, donors and the creative wizards at transformational agency BRC Imagination Arts, the Barnum Museum looks ahead to a re-envisioned future as a true 21st century museum and a fitting tribute to its founder.
P.T. Barnum was an energetic, optimistic entrepreneur who changed the world of entertainment forever. Barnum’s final museum is a permanent “open house” where a world of visitors can get to know Barnum, be inspired by his story and feel the happiness he worked so hard to share.

Now in its 10th year, it is an ongoing, documentary-style photography and storytelling project. Other Bridgeport projects Jay and Geralene have produced include Main Street - Faces and Places (exhibits and calendar), The Thomas Merton House of Hospitality (exhibits and calendars) and Poli’s Palace and Majestic Theatres Memories Project (exhibits, talks, slideshow/video, book).
