Woe and Whimsy
Art from the Danse Macabre by Amanda Walker: “The Nationalist” and “The War Monger and the Activist”
Woe and Whimsy is a mind stretching exhibit that straddles mood and meaning. Artists combine figurative, naturalistic imagery with fantasy, process and invention. They interpret the theme by manipulating the figure, portrait, landscape, still life, to invent an alternative to 'reality', depicting memories, mood, thoughts and telling stories. Diverse media includes marble and wood sculptures, painting, fiber art, mixed media assemblage and collage.
Exhibit opens for the Bridgeport Art Trail, Nov 9, 2023, 5:30-8:00 pm.

Humor and fantasy are survival skills. In difficult times artists use these cathartic transformative skills to cope with adversity. For example, the Dadaist movement used absurdity to reflect the horrors and insanity of war.

During these uncertain times, denial and retreat from difficult socio-political issues, health and environmental challenges are irresponsible reactions. This exhibit presents the imagination and process of artmaking. Works depict personal ideas and feelings and reflect the zeitgeist of our times through the manipulation of naturalistic imagery, the figure, landscape, still life where artists express their interpretation of Woe and Whimsy.
