Through the Artist's Lens: Luis Lopez

The Artist, designer, and advocate reflects on the people, places, and experiences that continue to inspire his work.

Story and interview by Jason A. Coombs

Artist, photographer, designer, and community advocate Luis Lopez is this month's Artist of the Month, recognized for both his compelling visual work and his ongoing contributions to Bridgeport's arts community. Working from his immersive studio space at The Nest Arts Factory, Lopez creates paintings, photography, and visual works that invite viewers to explore the human experience, identity, and consciousness through a deeply personal lens. Born in Uruguay and raised in Bridgeport, he also serves on the executive board of the Bridgeport Pride Center and has contributed graphic design and marketing work for organizations including Greater Bridgeport Pride and the Bridgeport Film Fest.

For Lopez, art has always been a part of who he is. What began as a love of drawing and painting grew into a deeper calling as he taught himself portraiture and discovered art's power to help make sense of the world. In this month's feature, Lopez reflects on his creative journey, the influence of Bridgeport's arts community, and the advice he has for emerging artists finding their voice.

What first inspired you to become an artist, and can you remember a specific moment when you realized art would play an important role in your life?

I just always loved it, it was never really a decision. When I started teaching myself to paint portraits I realized this was more than something I did for fun. It was how I made sense of the world.

Bridgeport has a vibrant and growing arts community. How has being part of that community shaped your growth as an artist, and what keeps you inspired to create here?

Bridgeport has this range of artists I haven't seen anywhere else, experienced people with real knowledge and younger artists who are hungry and committed. I've never been around so many people actively trying to better themselves and I think that comes from this city. When the odds are against you that's what it takes. That energy motivates me and reminds me to keep going. Having my studio at The Nest for almost four years now gave me a place to get away, be alone with my thoughts, and really focus.

Looking back on your artistic journey so far, what has been one of the most meaningful moments or accomplishments that reminded you why you chose this path?

Leading my own mural on Yale Street near the old Bassick High School. It depicts children celebrating the fruits of their labor in a community garden. What made it meaningful was realizing people trusted me as an artist, that my skill and experience were finally being noticed. That meant a lot.

Who are some of the artists, mentors, or cultural influences that have shaped your creative journey, and how do those influences show up in your work today?

Salvador Dalí, Frida Kahlo, René Magritte, John Singer Sargent, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, and Caravaggio. What they all share is a commitment to the human figure and saying something deeper through it. That's what I go for too. I'm painting the human experience through my own lens, what it means to be a conscious being, how we experience time, and how intelligence can transcend the human brain. Almost like seeing the world from outside of ourselves.

As someone who has grown alongside the Bridgeport arts community, what excites you most about its future, and what advice would you give to emerging artists looking to find their place within it?

Bridgeport is getting real attention and the arts community here is a big part of why. My advice is just start. Don't wait until you're ready. I started copying photographs and it took years of teaching myself before I could create images straight from my own mind. That shift didn't happen overnight, but it happened because I kept showing up.
